Increase Your Effectiveness with Prioritization

Everyone wants to increase their effectiveness. Whether you want to be a better mother or a better salesmen, one of the keys to increasing your success is becoming more effective and efficient. The best way to increase effectiveness is prioritization.

In today’s workplace and home life, however, it is difficult to prioritize because it seems like everything is a priority. Try these tips to manage your priorities:

  • Identify all of your tasks. The first step in assessing your priorities is to simply identify them all. Sometimes we expect more from ourselves than is possible in a single day! Write down everything you want to accomplish. Don’t worry about organizing it yet. We’ll get to that.
  • Sort into urgent and non-urgent. Not everything has to be done ASAP, even if it feels that way. What is actually urgent and what can wait until later?
  • Assess value. For each task, ask yourself questions like “Is this important to my health and well-being?” “Is this a necessary function of my job?” Evaluate whether your regular daily tasks are benefiting your personally and professionally.
  • Estimate time effort. This is a huge one. Everything we do takes time out of our day. Sometimes we don’t realize just how much. Make an estimate of your best case and worst case time commitment for each task.
  • Cut unnecessary tasks. There are things are your to-do list that you don’t need to do or don’t need to do with the frequency that you have planned.
  • Remember that flexibility is key. No matter how well you organize your life, life happens. Circumstances beyond your control will interfere with your best plans. Realize that you need to be flexible and able to take a deep breath when life throws a curve ball and know you have the organizational tools to hit it out of the park.
